Born November 30th 1933 Tupelo Mississippi University of Louisville  Arts BFA,  Graduated 1955 MFA 1961 Internationally recognized African American Color Field Painter. Creating geometric shapes similar collages Influenced by musicians, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. A member of The Washington Color School, a group of abstract artist who embraced innovative uses of color.Sam Gilliam taught Fine Art at the Corcoran School of Art, The Maryland Institute College of Art and Carnegie Mellon University
